Fela Kuti created, along with Tony Allen, the style known as Afro-beat, that style most beloved of DJ This Guy and DJ That Guy. Kuti and Allen created Afro-beat through a fusion of jazz, highlife, Nigerian folk music, soul and funk. We play some early, 60s Fela tracks, showing the roots of Afro-beat prior to its full development in the 70s. At the end of the episode we play Part 1 of a documentary produced by Wuyi Jacobs of Afrobeat Radio, which features a variety of illuminating interviews revealing the life of this musical giant. Parts 2 and 3 of this documentary will be featured on the next episode!
