Check these 70s rock bands from Zambia rippin' it to shreds! Rock and roll never caught on in Africa as much as other US styles like soul, funk and hip-hop, but in Zambia there seems to have been a scene for it. I especially like the Witch. Also, we got asked to an extra long show, and so we threw on a few extra, non-Afro tracks at the end here.

Pan-African Hour: African Rock and Roll Part 1 (Jan 19, 2011)

Rock and Roll never caught on in Africa like other US styles like jazz, funk or hip-hop. But it did have an impact, especially the psychedelic rock of the 60s. When we heard some of these track we had a hard time even believing they were African, cus were just not used to blazing fuzzy guitars in African music. Starting off with a more 50s rock and roll sound, most of the rest of the episode is of the 60s/70s variety of rock and roll. From San-Francisco style trip outs to the African version of Black Sabbath (check out Chrissy Zebby Tembo and the Ngozi Family), here is a rare form of African music. Some key albums: Love, Peace and Poetry Vol. 8: African Psychedelic Music, Nigeria Rock Special, The World Ends, and Next Stop...Soweto Vol. 2.
Hedzollah Soundz - Mee Bee (When)
Jimmy Solanke and the Junkers - Eje Ka Jo
Tinariwen - Oualahila Ar Tesninam
BLO - Miss Sagitt
Ofo the Black Company - Enario
Peace!! - Black Power
Colomach - Ottoto Shamoleda
The Monks - Blockhead
Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Ngozi Family - Fisherman
McCully Workshop Inc. - Same
Otis Waygood - Ten Light Claps And A Scream
The Third Eye - Brother
Chrissy Zebby Tembo & Ngozi Family - Trouble Maker
