Pan-African Hour: Women in African Music (June 3, 2010)

Kathy and Cathy check out the contribution of women to African music, focusing on female vocalists as there are very few instrumentalists. Featuring music by Soulja Fyah, Christy Azuma & Uppers International, Dimi Mint Abba, Oum Kalthoum, Lilia Vera, Celia Cruz, Oumou Sangare, Rokia Traore, Miriam Makeba and the Skylarks, Umalali, and Orchestra Ethiopia. A diversity of styles and countries are covered, from Wassulu in Mali to jazz from South Africa. An interesting fact that we forgot to mention in the show: in Wassulu music (here represented by Oumou Sangare), only women are singers.
