Pan-African Hour: The Strut Record Label (June 30, 2010)

Strut is this dope record label that puts out a variety of awesome albums, from hip-hop to electro dance to Afro tunes. On this episode of the PAH we check out the albums that fit within the shows theme of music from Africa and the African Diaspora. Here's the albums we play, in the order we play em: 1) Mulatu Astatake: New York-Addis-London: The Story of Ethio Jazz 65-75, 2) Black Rio: Brazil Soul Power 1971-1980, 3) Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump, 4) Calypsoul 70: Caribbean Soul & Calypso Crossover 1969-1979, 5) Nigeria 70, 6)Black Rio 2: Original Samba Soul 1971 - 1979 (Compiled By DJ Cliffy), 7) New York - Addis - London - The Story Of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975 (again), 8) Next Stop...Soweto Vol.2, and 9) Next Stop...Soweto Vol.3. Unfortunately we didn't have the first volume of the Next Stop...Soweto series for this show, but I bet its super cool. Anyway, Sassafrass was working in a coal mine (AKA: folding laundry) during this show so K-tal serves as Sasparilla's chadeesh.

Here's some tunes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, mostly Congolese Rumba. Quite a few tracks are from an album called Golden Afrique Vol. 2, and we also play a song from the third volume of the Congotronics series, which features the Kasai All-Stars, a band of people from the DRC with different tribal and thus musical backgrounds, all collaborating together to make an interesting style. A bit of mbira (AKA: thumb-harp) here and there, and even some yodeling courtesy of Wendo Kolosoy.
