Pan-African Hour: African Rock and Roll Part 1 (Jan 19, 2011)
Rock and Roll never caught on in Africa like other US styles like jazz, funk or hip-hop. But it did have an impact, especially the psychedelic rock of the 60s. When we heard some of these track we had a hard time even believing they were African, cus were just not used to blazing fuzzy guitars in African music. Starting off with a more 50s rock and roll sound, most of the rest of the episode is of the 60s/70s variety of rock and roll. From San-Francisco style trip outs to the African version of Black Sabbath (check out Chrissy Zebby Tembo and the Ngozi Family), here is a rare form of African music. Some key albums: Love, Peace and Poetry Vol. 8: African Psychedelic Music, Nigeria Rock Special, The World Ends, and Next Stop...Soweto Vol. 2.

Pan-African Hour: Return to the Ethiopiqes Series (Jan 12, 2010)
It's been a while, but we've finally returned to the Ethiopiques series put out by the Buda Musique label. This series just keeps growing, and is now at 27 albums. While in the past we focused more on the funky soul side of the series, in this episode we instead turn towards some of the more soft selections. From Ethiopian ragtime, to ethereal harp playing, there are many haunting sounds to be heard.
